Cornell University Library is increasing its attention toward patron privacy, through a multi-pronged approach that incorporates education, awareness, and new tools. One aspect of this project is an idea to warn patrons about our vendors’ (in)attention to patron privacy. We propose a tool that helps patrons understand how vendors might misuse their data, while also sharing our data with other institutions and vendors themselves. The project would raise awareness among all parties, and hopefully guide some vendors to be more selective in what data they collect, and what they do with that data. This session will present the idea, its intentions, and how we hope it will come to fruition.
