Opening Keynote: Libraries and the Practice of Freedom in the Age of Algorithms
How prepared are librarians, and the students they serve, to navigate technologies that are fundamentally changing how we encounter, evaluate, and create information? In the past decade, a handful of platforms have become powerful information intermediaries that help us search and connect but also are tools to foment disinformation, amplify hate, increase polarization, and compile details of our lives as raw material for persuasion and control. We no longer have to seek information; it seeks us. Project Information Literacy has revealed college students’ lived experience through a series of large-scale research studies. To cap a decade of findings, we conducted a qualitative study that asked students, and faculty who teach them, what they know and how they learn about our current information environment. This talk explores what students have taught us, where education falls short, why it matters, and how time-tested library values – privacy, equity, social responsibility, and education for democracy – can provide a blueprint for creating a socio-technical infrastructure that is more just and equitable in the age of algorithms.

S68: The Need for Greater Interoperability: As User Expectations Continue to Evolve, So Should the Library Software They Use
This panel will offer a robust and interactive discussion of the ways library services should intersect with various tools and programs. When these intersections are successful, it is easier for libraries to assess their impact and improve services. Specifically, the panel will explore how the limitations of interoperability affect different library services, and how vendor provided or locally created tools, especially APIs, support these efforts. The group will examine this topic from technical, contractual, and industry perspectives in order to better understand and solve interoperability challenges. By doing so, libraries and their vendor partners will provide better systems interoperability and workflows for library staff and users.

S72: Protecting Patron Privacy: A Plan for Warning Patrons about Vendor Data Abuses
Cornell University Library is increasing its attention toward patron privacy, through a multi-pronged approach that incorporates education, awareness, and new tools. One aspect of this project is an idea to warn patrons about our vendors’ (in)attention to patron privacy. We propose a tool that helps patrons understand how vendors might misuse their data, while also sharing our data with other institutions and vendors themselves. The project would raise awareness among all parties, and hopefully guide some vendors to be more selective in what data they collect, and what they do with that data. This session will present the idea, its intentions, and how we hope it will come to fruition.
